How many chairs do I need for my dining table?
Most buyers order a set for a full dining table at once. A pair fits comfortably on each long side of a smaller table, four or six around a standard table, and eight or more around a longer one. What makes a high-quality Pierre Jeanneret design chair?
The quality of a Pierre Jeanneret design chair comes down to four things: the grade of the teak, the type of rattan, the faithfulness to the original Chandigarh design, and the standard of the craftsmanship. We use A-grade teak heartwood, square-woven natural rattan, a 74-point inspection on every chair, and a unique deep-laser engraved serial number.
What is A-grade teak, and why does it matter?
A-grade teak comes from the centre of the tree, the oldest and densest part, with the fewest knots. It is naturally resistant to moisture, heat, and insects. Pierre Jeanneret specified teak for this reason when he designed the original Chandigarh furniture in the 1950s. We work only with teak (Tectona grandis) from sustainably managed plantations.
Why teak and not oak or beech?
Many re-editions in the market today use stained oak, beech, or softwoods finished to resemble teak. Teak has properties those woods do not share: a natural oil content that no substitute wood matches, a density that keeps its strength and holds joinery tight over decades, and a warm tone that deepens with age, developing unmatched character.
How is the rattan woven?
The rattan seat and backrest are cut from natural cane and woven by hand in the original square pattern. Each strand is threaded into the frame individually. The open grid defines the chair's look and gives the seat both its strength and its elasticity.
How do I care for the Office Chair?
A Pierre Jeanneret Office Chair needs very little care. Wipe the teak and rattan occasionally with a soft moist cloth. This keeps the rattan moist so that it keeps its flexibility.
What is the V-leg?
The V-shaped leg is the chair's most recognised feature, sometimes called the drafting compass leg for its resemblance to the tool. In the Chandigarh design archive the chair is catalogued as PJ-SI-28-A. Every Object Embassy chair is marked on the underside with a deep-laser engraved serial number. This continues the 1950s Chandigarh tradition of numbering every chair to track it across the Capitol Complex buildings.
What is the Capitol Complex chair?
The Capitol Complex chair and the Pierre Jeanneret Office Chair are the same design. Capitol Complex is the group of administrative buildings Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret designed in Sector 1 of Chandigarh in the early 1950s, including the Secretariat, the High Court, and the Assembly. The Office Chair was designed for these buildings, which is why it is also known today as the Capitol Complex chair.
